Silver Study Abroad in the Philippines

NYU Silver students have the unique opportunity to study abroad and be an active part of an ongoing research study on women's health and resilience, reproductive health, domestic violence, and community economic development. For several years, Dr. Robert Hawkins and Silver students have traveled to Del Carmen, in the Philippines, to work with residents using a participatory action research model to help them identify unmet community needs and gather data. The mayor and citizens of Del Carmen have been able to use the research findings to propose changes and obtain funding which has led to creating meaningful change in their community.
“Studying abroad in the Philippines during my time at NYU was truly one of the best experiences I ever had while attending the institution.
I gained valuable qualitative research skills by engaging in one-on-one interviews, facilitating focus groups, and constructing field notes. Not only that, but I was exposed to a beautiful culture. I was able to participate in unforgettable activities such as local festivals and international marathons. To this day, I remain in contact with some of the incredible people I met in Del Carmen and I feel so fortunate to have even been granted the opportunity to meet them.”
