Mental Health Practice Area

Two people talking to each other at a desk

This area involves a range of settings, including private and public hospitals (psychiatric inpatient, outpatient, partialized, and emergency services), community-based mental health centers, residential programs, outpatient clinics, and training institutes. Students can expect to work with individuals, families, and small groups, and client challenges range from problems with daily living to severe pathology, with issues that are both acute and chronic.

In these settings, social workers are concerned with promoting a positive sense of personal well-being in which individuals feel comfortable with themselves, and are able to function in their various roles in life, and in family and social relationships.

Agency Examples:

  • Institute for Community Living
  • Mount Sinai Hospital
  • Metropolitan Center for Mental Health
  • Bellevue Hospital
  • National Institute for the Psychotherapies
  • Shanghai Mental Health Center
