Admission to the PhD program at the Silver School of Social Work is granted on a highly selective basis and determined by the quality of the overall application.


Requirements for Admission

Requirements for admission to the program include:

  • MSW degree with a graduate grade point average of 3.0 or higher, based on a 4 point scale;
  • Bachelor's degree with an undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 or higher, based on a 4 point scale;
  • Competitive scores on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), particularly in the quantitative reasoning and analytical writing sections;
  • Acceptable scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for applicants whose first language is not English;
  • A well-written and compelling statement of research interest; and
  • Three outstanding recommendations.

Note: While post-MSW practice experience is not a requirement, at least three years of experience is recommended.


NYU-ECNU Shanghai Dual PhD Degree

Formal admission to the dual PhD Degree program is a two-step process that includes an interview and nomination of the candidate by East China Normal University (ECNU) faculty to the Doctoral Program Faculty Committee at NYU Silver.

Applications should be simultaneously submitted to both NYU Silver and ECNU. Applicants will first be reviewed by ECNU with a subsequent review of the ECNU nominated candidates by the NYU Doctoral Program Faculty.

Students must be formally admitted to both schools in order to be a dual PhD student.

NYU Silver’s requirements for admission to the dual-degree program include:

  • Master’s degree with a graduate grade point average of 3.0 or higher, based on a 4 point scale (when available, ranking certificate among the class by the University should be provided);
    Bachelor’s degree with an undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 or higher, based on a 4 point scale (when available, ranking certificate among the class by the University should be provided);
  • Competitive scores on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), particularly in the quantitative reasoning and analytical writing sections;
  • Acceptable scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) for applicants whose first language is not English;
  • A well-written and compelling statement of research interest;
  • Three outstanding recommendations; and
  • While practice experience is not a requirement, at least three years of experience is recommended
