I chose to attend NYU Silver because of its diverse connections throughout NY State, and clinical focus. I knew I would be among peers who would challenge my thinking, yet value what I bring to academic discussions. Incoming students: do not hesitate to connect with Faculty and Staff. Their involvement in the field goes way beyond the classroom. Take full advantage of their expertise and broaden your scope.

I chose NYU Silver because of its excellent reputation for clinical study. The professors are bright and they bring their clinical experience to the classroom, which is a great learning tool for students. One piece of advice I have for incoming students is to pace yourself and do not leave assignments for the last minute, otherwise you will get overwhelmed.

I chose Silver because for its reputation of educating excellent clinicians. I am career changer, and my first year placement at HANAC, a non-intensive outpatient substance use agency, and my second year placement with the harm reduction program at GMHC, along with networking with talented professors, and classmates has given me a promising start to my new career. During the summer, I was a research fellow in the SARET program, an initiative to educate and spur interest among NYU students from diverse disciplines about addiction and the fundamentals of clinical research. I will participate in the Focused Learning Opportunity for Substance Abuse and Co-occurring Disorders to deepen my knowledge in this arena.

I chose NYU Silver because of the flexibility I knew I would get as an extended student. I've been able to take classes when it's convenient while still able to work. I wish I had given some thought to the kind of social work I would be interested in doing before I came to Silver; there are so many courses to choose from that I've had a hard time deciding which to pick. The one piece of advice I'd give incoming students is to get very comfortable with advocating for yourselves; if there is club you want formed, do it. If there is a book that should be in the curriculum, ask for it. The school is receptive to students speaking up!

I'm a career changer with a 20+ years of experience as a design executive. I loved what I was doing but as a volunteer with neuro-diverse children, I realized there was another calling for me. NYU is a place where I feel at home as an older, non-traditional student with kids. It also offers a great environment for forming friendships with peers and relationships with faculty that support and challenge me in reaching personal goals. With offers from other graduate schools, I ultimately chose NYU because of the many strengths and flexibility of the program and the benefits of doing graduate work with access to the larger NYU academic community.

Dual Degree MSW/MPH

Dual Degree MSW/MPH
Northwestern University
mrr463@nyu.edu

I love that the dual degree program allows me to take a wide variety of classes. The dual MSW/MPH program at NYU is an excellent fit for me. Having worked in both community health centers and social service agencies before school, I could see the need for professionals with both a macro/health systems background as well as clinical therapeutic training. My first field placement was at an agency working with young men with a history of criminal justice involvement. I had an amazing experience there and was able to see how many of my clients' individual struggles connected to larger health disparities.

Being at NYU as an MSW/MPH student has been a tremendous journey. The classes and the career skills I am gaining are helping to fuel my passion, while the people I interact with, help enrich my academic experience. At NYU, I do not feel like a number but a significant person that can actively contribute to society. With this in mind, I have crossed barriers and discovered new experiences I never thought imaginable. The atmosphere, opportunities for learning, and the love I have for advocacy in the health realm has empowered me, and so far, made my experience at NYU an unforgettable one.

What attracted me the most to NYU Silver were the amount of support given to students and the flexibility of the program. Coming from a large public undergraduate school, I have never felt so much encouraged and advocated for in a program. I especially love the flexibility of classes and specific populations you are allowed to choose, as NYU Silver is very good at allowing you to have the social work experience you want. The NYU graduate community is another big factor in why I chose to come here, as the transition from California, born-and-raised, to New York City was very difficult for me. Everyone is very warm and welcoming here!

I chose NYU because of the clinical program. I have loved everything about my experience thus far. Each course provides new concepts and ideas that interest and intrigue me. Prior to attending NYU I expected to think of the program in only an academic lens, but since then have realized Silver is a family and am now thinking of the program and my experience of a community building opportunity (that's what social work is all about!). One piece of advice would be to take a first year field placement outside of your desired area/population. You never know what opportunities are available until you explore them.

I chose NYU Silver because of the clinical focus of the program, with the ability to pick electives based on my interests. Moving to NYC was an enormous change for me, and the community at Silver has been very welcoming. My advice for incoming students is to trust yourself, and jump in with both feet!

Silver offers a diverse range of coursework and an even broader range of field placement opportunities throughout New York City. I came to NYU for the 32-Month Program for Working Professionals, which allows for the continuation of full-time work while attending classes and field placement. The School’s explicit focus on social justice and social work practice with an emphasis on empowerment and caring human relationships provides a solid floor to begin a career in social work, a profession needed by our communities now as much as ever.

The 16-Month Accelerated Program allows me to obtain an LMSW faster than any other program I applied to in NYC. Between my professors and field placement, I feel fully supported and I am confident that I will have many resources to turn to when applying for jobs come graduation. My one piece of advice for incoming students would be to welcome the new opportunities and experiences Silver has to offer. In my time here, I have been pushed beyond my comfort zone, which has resulted in an enormous amount professional and personal growth.

I decided to attend New York University for my masters in social work because I knew that I would be learning from, and working with, knowledgeable professors and a diverse group of students. The one piece of advice that I have for incoming students is to participate in class discussions so fellow classmates/professors to hear and understand your perspective. As for field placement experience, be willing to learn new ways of doing things that are familiar to you in-order to better serve your clients.

I chose NYU because I wanted to learn about social work in a vibrant and diverse urban environment. I want to use my degree to bring arts programming to young people in under-served communities. I did not realize how clinical the program was going to be but I think that my clinical training is going to make me an even more empathetic and effective service provider when I graduate.

I was drawn to NYU by its clinical reputation as well as the diverse social work experiences that are possible in New York City. I am particularly grateful for the connections I have made with fellow students who inspire me in their commitment to social justice. I would encourage all incoming students to get involved in student groups and other school organizations. In such groups, I have found venues to act on social issues, explore my identities, and receive the support needed to get me through those difficult times we all face in this work.

Social Work is powerful to me because it provides a platform where l can incorporate my organizing and activist skills to support and protect my communities in the struggle. My black, brown and indigenous people in the struggle continue to suffer and we must fight back, that is what I do. It is not simply a passion for me, it is a lifestyle l am proudly a part of. A true revolutionary will operate through these lens and fight through this system to make Social Justice/Work happen everywhere. All Power To The People <3

This year, Cynthia is a primary care social worker at Mount Sinai and continues support women’s empowerment and wellness.

As a student at NYU Silver, I am able to learn alongside individuals that are truly dedicated to social justice and empowering the disenfranchised. The school is filled with professors that will enlighten and frustrate you (in the best way possible) by encouraging you to be a skilled advocate for social change. As a working professional, NYU Silver provides the flexibility and consideration for students that need to split their time between work and school. I encourage students to build relationships with their peers and professors during their time at the school and soak in as much learning as possible!

NYU Silver has enabled me to grow professionally, and personally. I have written papers that have challenged me to self-reflect, to understand myself. This self-exploration has been paramount in my understanding of the world.
