Professor Jim Jaccard Named Interim Dean

May 12, 2016

As of September 1, James Jaccard will serve as Interim Dean. Jim is Professor of Social Work and Co-Director of the Center for Latino Adolescent and Family Health. He is also the Silver School’s Associate Dean for Research. Jim’s research focuses on adolescent and young adult problem behaviors, particularly those related to unintended pregnancy and substance use. A recipient of NIH support throughout his career, Jim was part of the initial team that designed the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, which interviewed over 20,000 adolescents and their mothers, and thus created one of the largest databases on adolescent health in the U.S. He also has written about theory construction in the social sciences. Most recently, Jim was honored to deliver the 2016 Aaron Rosen Lecture at the Society for Social Work Research, given in recognition of lifetime accumulation of a body of significant and innovative scholarship relevant to social work. Prior to coming to NYU in 2010, he was Professor of Psychology at Florida International University, and previously, Distinguished Professor for Research at SUNY Albany. He has served on numerous boards for the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine, and multiple grant review panels for the National Institute of Health.

Lynn Videka, Dean of the Silver School of Social Work, will be leaving NYU in August to serve as Dean of the University of Michigan School of Social Work. We thank Lynn for her service to NYU’s Silver School and to the University, and we wish her all the best going forward in her new position.
