Hosting West Point Cadets

October 3, 2017

Cadets in Captain Jacob Absalon's Sociology class at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point paid a visit to NYU Silver to learn about the social work profession, its commitment to social justice, and its role in the military.

The visit began with a morning presentation by Adjunct Lecturer Wendy Bassett on social work and the military. Later, the cadets had lunch with Dean and Paulette Goddard Professor of Social Work Neil B. Guterman, who spoke with them about the social work profession and his particular expertise in the prevention of child abuse and neglect. In the afternoon, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and MSW Program Director James I. Martin presented on social work and social justice, and McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research Director and Constance and Martin Silver Professor of Poverty Studies Michael A. Lindsey presented on the McSilver Institute's innovative social justice initiatives.

NYU Silver has developed a strong relationship with military service members and veterans, fostered by the Schultz Family Foundation's Onward Veterans Initiative.
