Academic publisher Elsevier has appointed NYU Silver Associate Professor Darcey Merritt to a two-year term as Associate Editor of Children and Youth Services Review (CYSR) effective January 1, 2018. A CYSR reviewer and editorial board member since 2009, in her new position, Dr. Merritt will oversee submissions to the publication in the area of public child welfare, including identifying reviewers and making recommendations based on reviewer evaluations.

Dr. Merritt joined the NYU Silver faculty in 2010 and has been a Faculty Fellow for the school’s McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research since 2012. She earned her MSW and PhD in social welfare from the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs, and she has extensive experience as a practitioner in the private and public child welfare systems, specializing in child and family assessments for appropriate foster and adoptive placements.

Dr. Merritt’s research interests include child maltreatment prevention; child and parent perspectives of public child welfare system involvement; maltreatment type definitional issues; parental challenges and fears; and neighborhood structural impact on maltreatment. In addition to CYSR, her work has been published in journals including Journal of Child and Family Studies, Journal of Public Child Welfare, Child Abuse and Neglect, Journal of Orthopsychiatry, Substance Use and Misuse, and Journal of Social Services Research. She serves on the Child Maltreatment Prevention Committee of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children (APSAC) and was lead author of the chapter on “Effective Program Models for the Prevention of Child Maltreatment” in the APSAC Handbook on Child Maltreatment, Fourth Edition.

Established in 1979, CYSR is an interdisciplinary forum for critical scholarship regarding service programs for children and youth.
