Apply Now!

This post-master's certificate program offers comprehensive and eclectic theoretical framework and practice approaches focused on specialized clinical practice skills in engagement, assessment and treatment of adolescents and their families.

This course provides comprehensive clinical knowledge and skills in areas of practice most relevant to work with adolescents and their families (outpatient community/agency based mental health, acute psychiatric care (IOP/PHP/Inpatient Tx), long-term residential treatment, schools and/or private practice. DSM-V assessment and diagnosis, along with an in-depth consideration of the intersectionality of race, ethnicity, gender and sexuality, will be used for case formulation and treatment plan design. This course is designed for clinical providers as well as supervisors and program directors specializing in practice with adolescents.

Program Highlights

  • Comprehensive clinical skills in engagement
  • Trauma-Informed aassessment and treatment of adolescents and their families, with consideration to cultural norms, gender and sexual identities
  • Individual, family, and group therapy skills
  • Eclectic review of clinical modalities indicated for the treatment of adolescents, including TF-CBT, Structural Family Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, Solid Object Relationship Model and general crisis management skills
  • Review of the adolescent system of clinical care and resources, including school intervention via special education services, and substance use/misuse treatment
  • Psychopharmacology knowledge for mental health providers, as well as the importance of multidisciplinary teamwork

"This program provides a fabulous overview of the unique issues that are tricky to navigate with adolescents, a rethinking of treatment modalities and their combinations, and focuses on issues that are particularly prevalent in adolescence such as depression, acting out, eating disorders, sexuality, and substance abuse. The talented professionals, specialists in their fields, who presented their ideas to us, provided us with valuable information and exposed us to what is current. I will be able to better serve my clients and their families."

- Sharon Kosakoff, MSW ’85, School Social Worker
