Adolescent Suicide: Prevention, Detection, Intervention

This interactive training takes on a topic that can feel overwhelming to many caregivers and service providers: the very real risks of adolescent suicide. The delicate combination of developmental stage, neurological development, rapid hormonal changes, and social challenges put this age group at greater risk for suicide than any other, yet there are also concrete, protective ways of providing support to teens who may be at risk for suicide or self-harm. By the close of the workshop, participants will have a deeper understanding of adolescent emotional and neurological development; potential warning signs and risk factors for suicide; and concrete, practical interventions to provide the best chances for the adolescent’s survival through such a transformational time.

As a result of attending this workshop, participants will:

1. Increase their understanding of adolescent development as it relates to neurological and hormonal processes and their connections to suicide risk.
2. Increase their understanding of the differences between levels of suicidality: ideation, gesture, plan and attempt.
3. Be provided with two empirically-tested models of suicide assessments.
4. Understand the emotional behavioral signs of and risk factors for adolescent suicide or self-harm.

Mara Gottlieb, PhD, LMSW, SIFI (she/her)

Dr. Mara Gottlieb is the President of Talking Changes, an anti-oppression and bias-awareness consulting firm. For over twenty years, she has run trainings across the country, including serving as a keynote speaker and presenting at NASW conferences. Her programs address subjects ranging from cultural humility to anti-racism advocacy, LGBTQIA awareness, teen suicide prevention, and vicarious trauma. Her coaching, supervising and training are all grounded in the knowledge that we can be and do our best when we feel authentically seen, valued and respected.

Dr. Gottlieb has served as an adjunct professor at the NYU Silver School of Social Work, Smith College School for Social Work, and Southern Connecticut State University. She has published articles in the Journal of Ethnic and Cultural Diversity in Social Work, The New Social Worker, and other publications. Dr. Gottlieb holds a BA from Brown University, and earned her MSW, certification as a Supervisor in Field Instruction (SIFI), and PhD in Social Work from NYU.

NYSED and ASWB/ACE approved for 3.5 Continuing Education Contact Hours.

55 jurisdictions accept ACE-approved provider CE contact hours. ACE is not an approved Continuing Education provider in the states of New York (though NYU Silver is NYSED CE approved in NYS) and West Virginia, unless the event is outside of West VA. ACE only approves individual courses in New Jersey, though NYU Silver is CSWE-accredited and therefore accepted for licensed NJ professionals. Here is a full list of statutes related to social work CE.
