The Alchemy of Loss: Mourning the Self as an Essential and Transformational Step in Healing From Trauma

Overview

Event details listed next to four lit pillar candles in a a dim room with blurred lights in the background

Live Online Workshop

Monday, May 19, 2025
1:00 – 3:00pm ET

NYSED and ASWB/ACE approved for 2 CE contact hours

As people heal from trauma, they often encounter profound grief — not only for what they endured but also for the self they might have been if they had received the love, protection, stability, and attunement they needed. This grieving process, known as 'mourning the self,' is not a setback but a crucial turning point — one that shifts clients from being stuck in past trauma to reclaiming their identity in the present. Though sometimes painful, this transformational process is essential for healing, self-compassion, and deeper connections. By acknowledging the lasting impact of their suffering, lost opportunities, and the coping strategies they developed to survive, clients can begin to integrate those experiences and move forward.

This second seminar in our Advanced Clinical series equips clinicians with practical tools to guide clients through this process, drawing from trauma recovery research, experiential methods and neuroscience. Participants will learn hands-on techniques from Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP), including co-regulation, inner dialogue with past selves, and meta-therapeutic processing. Through a blend of structured didactic teaching, case study discussions, right-brain experiential reflection, narrative and somatic exercises, and interview clips with insights about mourning the self from a survivor, participants will gain insight and strategies they can immediately apply in their clinical work. Please note: This course does not include clinical video demonstration.
