Anti-Black Racism: Continued Reflection for Practitioners and Educators

Overview

Composition of silhouette heads in a range of colors with the NYU Silver logo and the text Register Now: Anti-Black Racism: Continued Reflection for Practitioners and Educators (Part 2)

Live Online Seminar

Tuesday, November 8, 2022
5:30-8:00pm ET

NYSED and ASWB/ACE approved for 2.5 CE contact hours

This forum seeks to advance the discourse on Anti-Black racism from a variety of frameworks including Critical Race Theory, Intersectionality, and Feminist Theory. Practitioners/Providers/Educators will continue to examine their assumptions and biases as it relates to Blackness. The program will acknowledge and address the impact of global Anti-Black Racism on the psyche and lived experiences of People of African Descent (POAD) and Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) communities. Participants will further explore racial trauma and identify ways to engage clients in mapping their symptoms, finding their voices, and encouraging racial storytelling in clinical and educational settings.

Learning Objectives

As a result of attending this seminar, participants will:

  • Participants will grasp how Antiblack Racism is defined as well as strengthen their understanding of how this is manifested ideologically, interpersonally, institutionally, and internally (4 I's of Oppression). They will critically assess how perceptions of Blackness profoundly impact clinical engagement, assessment, and treatment planning.
  • Continue to demonstrate their ability to engage in critical self-analysis (using a variety of mind-body exercises and other exercises) to examine one's biases and assumptions as it relates to Blackness (or proximity to Blackness).
  • Creatively identify effective, clinical strategies to assess for symptoms of racial trauma as well as utilize a variety of tools to strengthen assessment, engagement, and intervention.

Christene Tucker LMSW (pronouns she/her) identifies as an Afro-Caribbean-American, reflective social worker who enjoys using art, drama, and fantasy in her work (when appropriate). Christene’s interests vary and include global history, fantasy literature, folklore, history of race, and Black feminist thought. Her favorite works/authors include Harry Potter, A Song of Ice and Fire (GOT), Marlon James, and NK Jemisin’s Broken Earth Trilogy.

By 2006, Christene joined NYC Administration for Children’s Services as a child protective specialist (CPS). In addition to her assigned tasks, Christene was heavily involved in various inter-agency and community activities.

Currently, Christene is a Child and Family Specialist (CFS)/Conference Facilitator, a third-year field instructor with ACS’s Professional Development Program, and an adjunct faculty member at Touro University’s MSW program. She also provides weekly psychotherapy for a private agency (focusing on gerontological social work).
