NYU Silver's DSW Program in Clinical Social Work
Mental health treatment practitioners are just beginning to grasp the deep implications of racial trauma on Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) and their communities. Licensed clinical professionals are now understanding the intense impact that repeated exposure to systemic racism and anti-Blackness is having on bio-psycho-social-spiritual systems. In fact, evidence shows that the constant traumatic stress of racial trauma creates deep epigenetic changes in the physiology and health of people (Sullivan, 2013). People who work with and treat BIPOC must understand the severity and clinical impact of racial trauma. They must undo the harm done to people and learn new and correct ways to treat BIPOC individuals. This conference attempts to shed light on this concern, as well as propose innovative and needed ways to interweave social justice and clinical care.
Learning Objectives
As a result of attending this conference, participants will be able to:
- Identify at least one (1) specific bio-psycho-social-spiritual impact from the experience of racial trauma.
- Define the ways clinicians have contributed to the problem of structural racism in mental health care and what can be done about it.
- Gain critical thinking skills in order to provide maximum care for BIPOC.
- Identify at least three (3) strengths-based interventions to support BIPOC in mental health treatment.
- Apply at least one (1) new intervention model to the people in a clinician’s care.
