Child Traumatic Stress During COVID-19

This presentation will introduce attendees to the concept of child traumatic stress, including definitions, diagnostic considerations, the difference between trauma in children vs. adults; the difference between stress and trauma; various approaches to treatment; the specifics of how children and adults are experiencing stress and trauma during the pandemic; and how adults can help.
Learning Objectives
By attending this presentation, participants will:
- Learn at least three specific differences between stress and trauma.
- Learn at least two differences between assessing traumatic stress in children vs. adults.
- Describe the specific ways the COVID-19 pandemic is impacting children and their parents and how to effectively intervene with specific models.
Presenter
Adam Brown, PsyD
Adam Brown, PsyD, is a clinical psychologist licensed and practicing in the state of New York since 1995. He is currently Clinical Assistant Professor in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the NYU Child Study Center, Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, where he provides training and technical assistance in Trauma Systems Therapy, as well as being the clinical coordinator of the trauma service in the faculty group practice, and teaching an undergraduate course in child and adolescent trauma. Dr. Brown has overseen programs for youth in inpatient, day treatment and residential settings. Dr. Brown has extensive training and expertise in the area of assessing and treating interpersonal trauma in children and adolescents. Specialized training and expertise includes evidenced based, trauma informed practices, including: Trauma Systems Therapy, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, the Sanctuary Model, Positive Behavior Interventions and Support, and Parent Child Interaction Therapy.
