(CFT) Compassion-Focused Therapy: Understanding the Neurobiology of Soothing Symptoms & Finding Balance.
Compassion-Focused Therapy is a model of psychotherapy developed by Dr. Paul Gilbert that integrates techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy with concepts from evolutionary psychology, social psychology, developmental psychology, Buddhist psychology, and neuroscience. This class is a practical, experiential session that will provide direct tools to implement this approach utilizing compassion-informed expressive techniques. Attendees will gain a solid understanding of the Compassionate Mind Training model to apply to clients' and practitioners' well-being.
Learning Objectives
As a result of attending this workshop, participants will:
- Understand the conceptualization of CFT (Compassionate Focused Therapy) and how it applies to the capacity for self-regulation.
- Review the Compassionate Mind Training Model, explore the range of skills, and how it can be applied to a range of mental health concerns.
- Conceptualize how to guide participants in finding balance between the 3 CFT systems - drive, threat and soothing systems.
Presenter
Reji Mathew, BSW, MSW, PhD, LCSW
Dr. Reji Mathew is an award-winning intermodal artist, thinker, educator, and neuroscience-informed psychotherapist and a (REAT) Registered Expressive Arts Therapist. Integrating different art forms is intrinsic to her creative process and therapeutic approach. Her therapeutic worldview is based on narratology and narrative therapy. This intersects with a commitment to understanding our complex identities, including class, culture, location, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, and accessibility. I begin my understanding of a person in the context of time, place, and culture.
Dr. Mathew's graduate education in social work, cultural studies, and community health at New York University shaped her therapeutic framework. She specializes in evidence-based treatment approaches, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), mindfulness, positive psychology (PP), resiliency, and mind-body wellness. Her approach is also trauma-informed, and I have also trained in eye movement desensitization reprocessing (EMDR).
Dr. Mathew's activism work includes work as an Arts Reporter for Disastershock.com, Arts Accessibility Advocate for Anti-Racist Teachers, and Board Member for BRIDGES, a center for independent living.
