Contemporary Models of Complex Grief: Overview and Clinical Implications
Overview

Live Online Workshop
Tuesday, June 17, 2025
2:00–4:00pm ET
NYSED and ASWB/ACE approved for 2 CE contact hours
Grief is not a malfunction that requires treatment. At the same time, bereavement increases the risk of experiencing loss-related mental health challenges, creating a dual imperative in the field of grief care: to avoid pathologizing grief through unnecessary intervention but also, to offer appropriate support for those grievers who suffer ongoing and profound mental health complications in the aftermath of a significant loss. The recognition that there is a wide range of support needs among grievers has led to a proliferation of research examining the neurological, psychological, and social processes that contribute to the development of distinct bereavement-related mental health challenges. Ultimately, this scholarship provides the foundation for establishing tailored approaches to bereavement care. This webinar will provide an overview of contemporary perspectives, theories, and research addressing how grief can become chronically severe, leading to what is referred to as Complex Grief or Prolonged Grief Disorder. The webinar will address sociocultural perspectives and critiques of complex grief as well as offer an overview of contemporary models of complex grief based in the fields of coping, attachment, neuroscience, and cognitive-constructivism. The webinar will also highlight clinical implications associated with these diverse perspectives on complex grief, noting relevant grief therapy approaches and techniques.
