Cultivating Cultural Humility: Excavating Our Unconscious Biases
Overview
Online Workshop
Friday, January 26, 2024
10:00am - 1:30pm ET
NYSED and ASWB/ACE approved for 3.5 CE contact hours
Whenever we interact with another person, we each bring our own personalities, values, ideas and perspectives to those interactions. Every one of us was raised in social environments (our family, our school, etc.) that informed us about our own identity, as well as the identities of others, in both subtle and overt ways. This training provides participants with unique opportunities to courageously reflect on who we are and the messages we received about ourselves and others, and to think about how these implicit messages serve us: how they impact perceptions and interactions with others, and how they affect our work. Participants will leave with an understanding of cultural humility as a lens through which to see ourselves and our clients; with concrete tools for having curious, respectful conversations around culture, and with a deeper understanding of the ways that who we are impacts what we do.
Learning Objectives
As a result of attending this workshop, participants will:
- Learn the broader definition of culture that incorporates every way that we or our clients might identify ourselves and how these apply to practice.
- Have an understanding of the term “humility” and how it applies to social service and mental health practice and cross-cultural work.
- Understand how cultural humility differs from cultural competence and serves as a more respectful, empowering and collaborative approach to direct social work and mental health practice.
