Culturally Responsive Suicide Prevention for Youth
Overview
In-Person Workshop
Friday, September 20, 2024
2:00-4:00pm
NYU Silver School of Social Work, 1 Washington Square North, Parlor, New York, NY 10003
NYSED and ASWB/ACE approved for 2 CE contact hours
Clinicians know all-too-well that suicidal ideation is commonplace in school-aged youth. It is the second leading cause of death for youth ages 12-18 (CDC, 2022). There has been a significant rise in adolescent mental health hospitalization since the start of COVID-19. Studies have found that adolescent suicidal ideation and attempts may be a reaction to stress or emotional distress (Tummala-Narra, Deshpande and Kaur, 2016) and the current climate intensifies these emotions leading to suicidal ideation and attempts. Studies have also found that the rate for suicide attempts have increased for youth in Black, Latinx and Asian/Pacific Islander communities (Ramchand et al, 2021). Newspapers report that the “next wave” of the pandemic is issues in child mental health (US News and World Report, 2021). Clinicians see this “next wave” daily.
This workshop will teach clinicians how to properly assess for suicidal ideation, learn when the level of suicidal ideation requires further assessment in a hospital setting and will address all of this with a culturally affirming lens. Many times white clinicians (or clinicians without shared ethnicity to their clients) are sole practitioners in schools with BIPOC students, and we will work to address social location and the proper tools to use to assess suicidal ideation with BIPOC students. We will also use tools to manage long-term suicidal ideation without hospitalization. Finally, we will address school reintegration with high-risk youth, all with a collaborative frame. The presenter will normalize the assessment process so that clinicians bring conversations about suicidal ideation into their daily practice with youth.
Learning Objectives
As a result of this workshop, students will be able to:
- Understand the new levels of suicidal ideation in BIPOC youth and reintegration into school through a culturally affirming lens.
- Have current step-by-step training on suicide assessment, hospitalization, reintegration post-hospitalization, and collaborative care with school staff, administration, inpatient clinicians and the family/guardians.
- Reflect on case examples and learn the different levels of interventions ranging from making a referral to a therapist to calling 911.
- Normalize conversations about suicide assessment and risk to bring this into daily practice.
