This presentation addresses the unique presentation of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) + Anxiety, how to adapt cognitive behavioral approaches for individuals with ASD, and reviews specific anxiety reduction and skill building protocols for individuals with ASD + Anxiety. First, we will review presentation of ASD and unique symptom presentation of anxiety in ASD. Next, using a positive behavior support approach, we will address how to assess the functions of behaviors in the context of anxiety. We will teach the audience how to apply empirically supported cognitive behavioral approaches to anxiety reduction for individuals with ASD while also supporting the unique presentation and learning style of individuals with ASD (e.g., Social Stories, visual schedules, antecedent management, positive reinforcement). Lastly, we will give an overview of anxiety and skill building treatment protocols designed specifically for individuals with ASD (Facing Your Fears; Behavioral Interventions for Anxiety in Children with Autism (BIACA); Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills (PEERS)).
