Introduction to human-animal interactions in social work practice. Overview of human-animal interactions in clinical, community, and macro settings with review of animal roles and appropriate terminology. Emphasis is placed on cultural and social justice issues involving intersecting systems of oppression, speciesism and violence against humans and animals.
Learning Objectives
As a result of attending this seminar, participants will be able to:
- Provide five (5) examples of human-animal interactions in micro, mezzo, and macro practice settings
- Differentiate between four (4) animal roles in social work settings
- Recognize three (3) areas of additional competency for clinical social workers who incorporates animal interactions in therapy
- Describe three (3) areas of intersecting violence between people and animals
- Identify two (2) areas of limitation in the existing research literature for human-animal interactions in social work
Presenter
Nina Ekholm Fry, MSSc., CCTP
Nina Ekholm Fry, MSSc., CCTP, is the Director of Equine Programs at the Institute for Human-Animal Connection at University of Denver and a faculty member in the Graduate School of Social Work and the Graduate School of Professional Psychology. She coordinates the Human-Animal-Environment Interactions in Social Work certificate within the Denver Campus MSW program. For the past 15 years, her work has focused on human-animal interactions in mental health. She has a particular interest in applied ethics and social justice perspectives within human-animal interactions, including human-animal conflict.

55 jurisdictions accept ACE-approved provider CE contact hours. ACE is not an approved Continuing Education provider in the states of New York (though NYU Silver is NYSED CE approved in NYS) and West Virginia, unless the event is outside of West VA. ACE only approves individual courses in New Jersey, though NYU Silver is CSWE-accredited and therefore accepted for licensed NJ professionals.
