Mindful Supervision: Towards Workforce Effectiveness and Resilience
Overview
Live Online Presentation
Tuesday, May 25, 2021
5:30–7:00pm EDT
NYSED and ASWB/ACE approved for 1.5 CE contact hours
This presentation addresses the skillset necessary for clinical supervisors to mitigate the impact of Secondary Traumatic Stress in practitioners who work with individuals with complex care needs. Effective clinical practice that requires the practitioner to be genuinely present in the therapeutic encounter exposes them to the distress and trauma of clients that, all too often, may trigger their own trauma or slowly erode a therapeutic boundary. Over time this diminishes the practitioner’s capacity for genuineness and empathy. Mindful Supervision makes a space in the supervisory relationship for recognition and response to this phenomenon, restoring the practitioner’s ability for empathy through validation and resiliency building.
Learning Objectives
As a result of attending this presentation, participants will be able to:
- Understand the importance of supervision for both organizational and professional resiliency.
- Identify indicators of Secondary Traumatic Stress and how they apply to principles of mindful supervision.
- Apply mindfulness and trauma-informed principles in the practice of supervision of LMSW, LMHC, and LCSW.
Presenters
Yves Ades, PhD
With over 25 years of experience in community-based behavioral health and supportive housing program design, development and management, Dr. Ades launched Ades Integrated Health Strategies in 2014 through which he has provided training and technical assistance for the implementation of best practices that facilitate engagement with high risk/high need populations. Adopting the principles Trauma-Informed Culture has been of central importance to provider organizations seeking to improve health outcomes for people with complex health care needs. Dr. Ades has worked with community-based providers and provider member organizations in New York City, Long Island, Rockland County and the Hudson Valley. In his own words: “At the heart of my consulting practice is the knowledge, tailored assistance and guidance, that community-based providers often need, to manage the inevitable tension between the business of health care and the art of caring.”
Dr. Ades has relied on the seminal contributions of Maxine Harris, Roger Fallot and Bessel Van Der Kolk as the basis of his work on adoption of Trauma Informed Culture in healthcare settings.
