This course explores the intricate intersection of perinatal mental health, trauma, and loss. Complexities of emotional well-being during and after childbirth are addressed as they relate to the perinatal period. Participants will gain insights into the psychological, social, and cultural factors influencing perinatal mental health with a focus on justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion. Topics covered include recognizing signs of distress, identifying Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs), trauma-informed care, grief support, and strategies for fostering resilience. Additionally, the course will address the impact of trauma and loss on the perinatal mental health continuum while fostering a compassionate and informed approach to supporting individuals navigating these challenges. Through a blend of theoretical frameworks, case studies, and practical applications, participants will develop the skills necessary to provide sensitive and effective care for those experiencing perinatal mental health issues, trauma, and loss.
Learning Objectives
As a result of this course, students will be able to:
- Define and identify perinatal mental health mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) and associated symptoms.
- Create a culturally-sensitive approach to working with individuals in the perinatal period.
- Identify resources available to support individuals and families affected by PMADs, trauma, and loss in the perinatal period.
Presenters
Veronica Vega, LMSW, SIFI, RYT
Veronica is a doctoral candidate at New York University's Silver School of Social Work, on track to obtain her Doctorate in Clinical Social Work (DSW) degree by Spring 2025. Her research focuses on bridging the gap to equitable, perinatal healthcare. Areas of interest stem from her lived experience and those experiences shared by birthing people in historically marginalized communities. Her academic and professional contributions aim to promote the importance of perinatal and postpartum mental health, trauma-informed care, and patient-centered care.
Veronica has over 15 years of experience supporting diverse populations in a variety of Mental Health settings which include private practice, public, and nonprofit organizations. She is the Founder of The Mama Sanctuary, LLC. (Embody Lotus & Bloom), which creates space for individuals navigating transitions in pregnancy and postpartum periods. Veronica utilizes an integrative and holistic approach to healing, incorporating her skills as a Psychotherapist, Reiki Practitioner, Prenatal and Postnatal Yoga Teacher, and Meditation Facilitator.
She currently holds leadership roles as an Adjunct Professor at NYU, is a New York Chapter Board Member at Postpartum Support International, and is a Female Founders Circle Member at NYU’s Entrepreneurial Lab (Leslie eLab). Veronica is also a proud committee member of the Family Advisory Council at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore.
Veronica aspires to continue providing education, support, and wellness to individuals and families. She is deeply committed to a current Bronx initiative aimed at providing accessible, safe, and healthy birthing experiences. Through her efforts, Veronica strives to create community healing and meaningful change.
Solimar Santiago-Warner, LCSW, PMH-C
Solimar Santiago-Warner, LCSW, PMH-C, is an esteemed professional in social work, holding a Doctor of Social Welfare in Clinical Social Work from New York University. With a research focus on equitable access to perinatal palliative care, she holds licenses in clinical social work in New York and Connecticut, alongside certification as a Perinatal Mental Health Provider. As an Adjunct Professor at Fordham University and NYU's Silver School of Social Work, Dr. Santiago-Warner imparts theoretical frameworks on grief, loss, and bereavement. As the owner and psychotherapist at Solmaterna, she specializes in maternal mental health, grief, loss, and trauma. Dr. Santiago-Warner's impactful presentations and publications in reputable journals demonstrate her expertise in perinatal palliative care. Fluent in English and Spanish, she is dedicated to meeting diverse client needs. In her past experiences at Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital-New York-Presbyterian, Dr. Santiago-Warner supported mothers, families, and medical teams navigating life-limiting diagnoses and loss. She provided consultation and support to Labor and delivery personnel and collaborated with the OBGYN service to develop a patient-centered curriculum on perinatal loss for medical residents. As an inaugural member of the National Pediatric Palliative Care Task Force, she represented the Social Work Hospice and Palliative Care Network from 2020-2023, co-chairing the needs assessment group. Recognized with honors and awards, including accolades from New York Presbyterian, Dr. Santiago-Warner actively contributes to professional organizations and committees. Her commitment extends to educational initiatives as a mentor, field instructor, and serving on doctoral committees at New York University. Dr. Santiago-Warner's holistic approach, research passion, and dedication underscore her exceptional contributions to the field of social work.

Cancellations and Refunds
If after registering, you determine that you can no longer attend this event, The Office of Global and Lifelong Learning will issue refunds on the following basis:
- Refund requests made on or before October 4, 2024 (by midnight): full refund
- Refund requests made on or before October 8, 2024 (by midnight): 50% refund
- Refund requests made on or after October 9, 2024: no refund
If this event is cancelled, all registrants will be fully reimbursed. To withdraw from and be reimbursed for this event, please complete the event withdrawal form.
