Redefine Strong: Black Women's Mental Health Conference
Overview
Live Online Conference
Saturday, November 19 and Sunday, November 20, 2022
10:00am - 6:00pm ET (both days)
NYSED and ASWB/ACE approved for 13 CE contact hours
Co-sponsored by:
According to intersectionality theory, African-American women in America are a “double minority” (Crenshaw, 2017). This means their race and gender impact both their psychological experiences as well as their mental well being. African American women are at a higher risk to develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and also face more mental health challenges than other racial groups in America (Castelin & Grace, 2022). Empowering Black women to take control of their health and mental health can help reshape outcomes. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 10.45% of Black adults in the United States have no form of health insurance which denies them access to mental health care (2020). This leads to increased health disparities for Black women in behavioral healthcare. Join us in this interactive experience to deconstruct and better understand Black woman wellness using an ecological perspective. Attendees will increase their knowledge of these issues, as well engage in relaxation techniques to create a personalized self-care plan.
At this conference, recommendations will be made in these areas as well as how clinical social workers and other licensed professionals can help this population to navigate and access treatments and build a strong support system post COVID-19. Discussions will focus on health disparities and solutions. Join us!
Learning Objectives
As a result of attending this conference, participants will be able to:
- Discuss and learn specific issues of mental health for Black women.
- Address evidenced-based and best practices interventions for this population.
- Learn ways to build capacity and a strong Black women's schema from a micro-mezzo-macro perspective.
- Identify at least one (1) new practice model of working with Black women.
