Reflections on Anti-Blackness: Implications for Social Work and Mental Health Practice
Overview
Live Online Seminar
Friday, January 21, 2022
10:00–11:30am ET
NYSED and ASWB/ACE approved for 1.5 CE contact hours
Presenter will introduce participants to Anti-Blackness by providing the current (and evolving) definition as well as examples of how this is manifested structurally, interpersonally and institutionally. Facilitator will also provide various examples of how this is perpetuated in multiple institutions (including child welfare, educational systems, clinical settings, etc.).
Presenter will use breakout rooms to examine how perceptions of Blackness influence how we engage, assess and treat individuals, families and communities. The goal is to explore how social workers and mental health providers can deconstruct White Superiority and unpack how deceptively “well-meaning” practices dominate rather than heal the client system(s). Additionally, there will be extensive discourse related to Internalized Anti-Blackness/Devaluation/Racism and its influence on clinicians and (stakeholders) of color.
Learning Objectives
As a result of attending this seminar, participants will be able to:
- Clearly define Anti-Blackness racism (also contextualizing colorism and internalized anti-blackness) and provide personal, structural and/or institutional examples.
- Critically assess how perceptions of Blackness profoundly impacts clinical engagement, assessment and treatment planning.
- Define internalized anti-black racism/afro-pessimism and provide examples on how this is manifested in various institutions (including clinical settings).
- Creatively explore various ways to confront and subsequently abolish anti-black racism in clinical discourse, practice and organizational policy.
- Increase self-awareness to become dynamic participants in anti-racist practice and advocacy in child welfare, educational, mental health and other clinical arenas.
