“Looking behind, I am filled with gratitude, looking forward, I am filled with vision, looking upwards, I am filled with strength, looking within I discover peace.”
–Quero Apache Prayer
Self-care is spoken about often in the social work and mental health profession as a way to mitigate stress that may lead to burnout, compassion fatigue, secondary trauma, vicarious trauma, and PTSD. Often times finding ways to participate in self-care in a balanced way can be difficult. The 8 dimensions of wellness can be used to measure which areas of a persons life need to be given more attention to achieve overall wellness.
Yoga and mindfulness practices have been shown to be extremely helpful in reducing anxiety, depression, symptoms of PTSD as well as various other health conditions. Regular use of mindfulness practices contribute to overall wellbeing and can be used as part of a practitioner’s self-care toolbox. Learning these practices can also provide practitioners the opportunity to pass on mindfulness practices to clients. It is also important to learn how practices can be used safely with different client populations.
Learning Objectives
As a result of attending this seminar, participants will:
- Be able to identify different components of self-care using 8 dimensions of wellness
- Be able to identify areas in which self-care can be improved
- Learn various mind-body techniques which they can use for themselves and clients
- Learn how to adapt mind-body techniques to different client populations
