SOS For Emotions: Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
Overview
Online Workshop
Wednesday July 26, 2023
10:00am-1:00pm ET
NYSED and ASWB/ACE approved for 3 CE contact hours
DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) is a cross-diagnostic model of emotional-cognitive-behavioral therapy which teaches both practitioner and participants the core skill of emotional regulation. The tenets of this model are to teach participants to manage, regulate and cope with difficult emotions. This model teaches people to live in the moment, develop healthy ways to cope with stress, regulate their emotions and improve relationships with others. DBT was originally designed to treat people with borderline personality disorder (BPD) but has been widely adapted to treat other mental health conditions. This will be a practical hands-on session.
Learning Objectives
As a result of attending this workshop, participants will:
- Conceptualize the DBT model of Emotional Regulation integrated with Dialectical Philosophy.
- Gain an introductory review of the 4 Core Skill Modules of DBT: 1 - Mindfulness, 2 - Distress Tolerance, 3 - Emotional Regulation, 4 - Interpersonal Skills.
- Conceptualize how to integrate DBT concepts with various theoretical approaches. How to use DBT when in crisis - learning survival and regulation.
Presenter
Reji Mathew, BSW, MSW, PhD, LCSW
Dr. Reji Mathew is an award-winning intermodal artist, thinker, educator, and neuroscience-informed psychotherapist and a (REAT) Registered Expressive Arts Therapist. Integrating different art forms is intrinsic to her creative process and therapeutic approach. Her therapeutic worldview is based on narratology and narrative therapy. This intersects with a commitment to understanding our complex identities, including class, culture, location, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, and accessibility. I begin my understanding of a person in the context of time, place, and culture.
Dr. Mathew's graduate education in social work, cultural studies, and community health at New York University shaped her therapeutic framework. She specializes in evidence-based treatment approaches, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), mindfulness, positive psychology (PP), resiliency, and mind-body wellness. Her approach is also trauma-informed, and I have also trained in eye movement desensitization reprocessing (EMDR).
Dr. Mathew's activism work includes work as an Arts Reporter for Disastershock.com, Arts Accessibility Advocate for Anti-Racist Teachers, and Board Member for BRIDGES, a center for independent living.
