Understanding the Impact of Stockholm Syndrome
Overview

Live Online Workshop
Friday, April 4, 2025
10:00am – 1:00pm
NYSED and ASWB/ACE approved for 3 CE contact hours
What do we know about Stockholm Syndrome? Why does it happen? Stockholm Syndrome is defined as a coping mechanism for a captive and/or abusive situation. Over time, people can develop positive feelings toward their captors or abusers. Stockholm Syndrome applies to situations including child abuse, coach-athlete abuse, relationship abuse, sex trafficking, and other coercive situations. Though it is often referred to in the media, a deeper understanding of this issue is elusive. This workshop clarifies the history and theory behind this commonly misunderstood phenomenon. How it is presented in mental health practitioners’ work is examined. Additionally, the intersection of Stockholm Syndrome and Abusive Traumatic Bonding (ATB), child abuse, and domestic/intimate partner violence is examined. In the workshop, case studies and interactive tools are provided and applied. The workshop is a dynamic combination of concrete instruction, powerful examples from the literature and clinical practice, and active discussion.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Define and identify the specific characteristics of Stockholm Syndrome.
- Learn the history and prevalence rate of Stockholm Syndrome.
- Identify the ways Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is involved in the development of Stockholm Syndrome.
- Grasp the complexities of navigating Stockholm Syndrome's presentation in child abuse, Intimate/Domestic Partner Violence, and Abusive Traumatic Bonding (ATB).
- List 3 to 5 specific action steps to effectively treat Stockholm Syndrome.
