Empowering Parents Through Relational Trust to Support their Teens with Disruptive Behaviors

This talk will focus on using strategic parenting skills to reduce parent-child conflict and increase relational trust, communication, and teen development and compliance. Attendees will learn how to support parents of teens with more severe disruptive behaviors to re-engage in positive interactions with their teens. Attendees will learn the difference between parenting influence and control, and how parenting influence can be used to shape teen behavior and reduce coercion. Attendees will learn how to teach parents to better see the reality of who their teens are today. The session will highlight how to teach parents about the influence of emotions on parenting decisions and behaviors. Teen aggression and substance use will be used as case examples of these concepts.
Learning Objectives
As a result of attending this presentation, participants will be able to:
- Define and differentiate between parenting influence and control;
- Differentiate and apply the strategic parenting skills and intentions;
- Define boiling point and its use in strategic parenting;
- Understand the role of emotions in parenting decisions and behaviors; and
- Apply strategic parenting skills to the case examples of substance use and teen aggression.
Presenter
Whitney Waugh, PhD
Whitney Waugh, PhD, is the Director of Education Administration at NYULH Department of Child and Adolecent Psychiatry. She is a licensed child and adolescent psychologist who specializes in the treatment of ADHD and Disruptive Behavior Disorders through individual and parenting interventions. She teaches the following courses at NYU: Drugs and Kids, #trendingmentalhealth and Road to Resilience.

- Refund requests made on or before February 4, 2023 (by midnight): 50% refund
- Refund requests made on or after February 5, 2023: no refund
