This course provides an introduction to substance use and abuse. Topics covered include: drugs of abuse, involvement of substance users in systems of care, drug treatment approaches, supporting sustained recovery, and relapse.

Learning Objectives

As a result of attending this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain two signs that an individual is using substances in a problem way.
  • State two reasons people who use alcohol and other drugs may not want to stop.
  • Describe two ways substance abusers have been negatively impacted by systems of care.

Presenter

Naomi Weinstein headshot Naomi Weinstein, MPH

Naomi is currently an Independent Consultant with a focus in training and technical assistance in substance abuse, mental health, child welfare, and harm reduction. Her ecent projects include a practice workbook on clinical documentation in behavioral health, development of a background paper: in key issues when involving individuals with lived experience and a Webinar series on data visualization. Prior to this role, Naomi, was the Vice President, Innovations and Development Office at ICL. Here she oversaw all aspects of professional development and implementation of best practices for more than 1200 employees. Prior to this she was the Director, Center on Recovery and RehabilitationDirector, Center on Recovery and Rehabilitation, The Coalition for Behavioral Health. Here she provided training, technical assistance, resources, and other support for NYC-area mental health recovery programs. Prior, she was Director, Center on Addiction and the Family, Center on Addiction and the Family at Phoenix House. Here she directed the Bridges Leadership Institute - a cross-training program to build professional understanding of the intersection of drug treatment, child welfare, and mental health that ran for 10 years. Naomi also held numerous positions at The Children of Alcoholics Foundation. She has a Master's in Public Health from Columbia University.

Cancellations and Refunds

If after registering, you determine that you can no longer attend this event, The Office of Global and Lifelong Learning will issue refunds on the following basis:

  • Refund requests made on or before May 13, 2022 (by midnight): full refund
  • Refund requests made on or before May 18, 2022 (by midnight): 50% refund
  • Refund requests made on or after  May 18, 2022: no refund

Refund dates are the same when registering for the full series.

If this event is cancelled, all registrants will be fully reimbursed. To withdraw from and be reimbursed for this event, please complete the event withdrawal form.

NYSED and ASWB/ACE approved for 2 Continuing Education Contact Hours.

New York University Silver School of Social Work is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers {#SW-0012}.

New York University Silver School of Social Work is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed mental health counselors {#MHC-0083}.

For Mental Health Practitioners: Please check with your state, if you are not licensed in New York, to determine if these credits will be accepted for licensing renewal.

55 jurisdictions accept ACE-approved provider CE contact hours. ACE is not an approved Continuing Education provider in the states of New York (though NYU Silver is NYSED CE approved in NYS) and West Virginia, unless the event is outside of West VA. ACE only approves individual courses in New Jersey, though NYU Silver is CSWE-accredited and therefore accepted for licensed NJ professionals. Here is a full list of statutes related to social work CE.
