Supporting Neurodiversity: Sensory Integration Meets Emotional Regulation

Join Emma Arnoff LCSW, owner and director of The Sensory Space, to learn about how to support Neurodiversity in schools, agencies, and organizations. The Sensory Space marries psychotherapy and sensory integration to provide a space where children can be who they are and grow into their best selves. Participants will learn about why we bring sensory integration and emotional regulation together and how they can do the same in their work with children and families. Emma will facilitate discussions to help better understand Neurodiversity, Ableism, and Inclusion. The goal of this training will be for participants to leave feeling passionate about creating Neurodiversity-Affirming communities.

Outline:

  • Learn about The Sensory Space
  • Practice regulating breath work
  • Learn the meanings of Neurodiversity/Neurodivergence
  • Gain an understanding of Ableism
  • Learn different diagnoses that fall under the Neurodivergent umbrella
  • Participate in activity to visualize Neurodivergent brain
  • Learn about Sensory Processing Disorder
  • Practice physical techniques for supporting SPD and Neurodivergencies
  • Build understanding of emotional regulation and what happens when it combines with sensory integration
  • Develop plans for creating calming sensory spaces
  • Discuss ways to meet Neurodivergent children and families where they are

Learning Objectives

As a result of attending this conference, participants will:

  1. Be able to recall, comprehend and apply the concepts of Neurodiversity, Neurodivergency, and Ableism.
  2. Learn about sensory integration and emotional regulation, and what happens when they come together as models of care. Participants will be able to perform, adapt and create activities to support sensory needs.
  3. Leave the training with tools and strategies to create Neurodiversity Affirming communities. Participants will be empowered to build and support communities.

Clinical Director

Emma is the proud owner of The Sensory Space. Her approach to therapy is collaborative. She works with children, adults, families, and groups. Utilizing a strength-based, person-centered approach helps Emma meet clients where they are. The goal of this work is to help clients identify strengths within themselves and develop ways to live productive and confident lives.

Prior to opening The Sensory Space, Emma worked with children and families in schools, residential treatment centers, and the foster care system. In addition to working with clients individually, she facilitated programs and groups on LGBTQIA issues, bullying, and social skills. Emma is a certified Children’s Yoga Instructor and loves to incorporate yoga and movement into therapy sessions. As a parent herself, she knows the many skills needed for child-rearing and has worked with parents individually and in groups focusing on strengthening the parenting skills needed for different developmental stages.

Emma has led workshops for schools, preschools, and colleges. Her workshops focus on supporting Neurodiversity in schools and organizations. Emma facilitates discussions on sensory integration, emotional regulation, and inclusion.

Cancellations and Refunds

If after registering, you determine that you can no longer attend this event, The Office of Global and Lifelong Learning will issue refunds on the following basis:

  • Refund requests made on or before December 6, 2023 (by midnight): full refund
  • Refund requests made on or before December 10, 2023 (by midnight): 50% refund
  • Refund requests made on or after December 11, 2023: no refund

If this event is cancelled, all registrants will be fully reimbursed. To withdraw from and be reimbursed for this event, please complete the event withdrawal form.

New York University Silver School of Social Work is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed mental health counselors {#MHC-0083}.

For Mental Health Practitioners: Please check with your state, if you are not licensed in New York, to determine if these credits will be accepted for licensing renewal.

55 jurisdictions accept ACE-approved provider CE contact hours. ACE is not an approved Continuing Education provider in the states of New York (though NYU Silver is NYSED CE approved in NYS) and West Virginia, unless the event is outside of West VA. ACE only approves individual courses in New Jersey, though NYU Silver is CSWE-accredited and therefore accepted for licensed NJ professionals. Here is a full list of statutes related to social work CE.
