Unboxing Ourselves and Our Clients: Making Space for LGBTQIA+ Identities
Overview
Online Workshop
Friday, March 22, 2024
10:00 am – 1:30 pm ET
NYSED and ASWB/ACE approved for 3.5 CE contact hours
The question is no longer whether we have LGBTQIA+ clients, but whether they feel safe enough to share this aspect of their identity with us. So let's talk about sexual and gender identities, how to bring those identities into the therapeutic relationship with respect and openness, and how knowing someone's sexual and gender identities enhances the potential for greater trust and progress.
This workshop provides participants with a clear understanding of sexual orientation, sexual identity, and gender identity. It is appropriate for participants with any level of knowledge regarding these identities, and offers straightforward, accessible, open discussion with opportunities for questions to be asked and answered. Accurate language and concrete tools to be effective allies and advocates will help practitioners in respectfully addressing sexual and gender identities.
Learning Objectives
As a result of attending this workshop, participants will:
- Increase their understanding of sexual identity and appropriate language/questions.
- Increase their understanding of gender identity and appropriate language/questions.
- Understand the developmental timelines for knowing one's own gender and sexual identities.
- Learn at least 4 ways to identify themselves as allies and advocates to the LGBTQIA+ communities.
