As the number of households with pets continues to increase, Veterinary Practices are identifying mental health needs among their staff and the clients they serve. Caring for unwell animals and the impact of their deaths often have overwhelming implications for caregivers and stewards alike. This presentation will identify these reactions and describe potential roles within this rapidly growing field.
Learning Objectives
As a result of attending this seminar, participants will be able to:
- Identify three (3) mental health needs of veterinary practitioners/practices.
- Name two (2) ethical challenges veterinary practitioners/practices commonly encounter.
- Describe three (3) potential roles within this field for social work professionals.
- List three (3) commonly encountered challenges human stewards face after the death of a companion animal.
- List five (5) essential components of forming an animal companion bereavement group.
Presenter
Susan Dowd Stone, MSW, LCSW
Susan Dowd Stone, LCSW is an author, advocate, educator, and therapist best known for her work in the cognitive therapies and women's reproductive mental health. She is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Silver School of Social Work where she presents in the Masters and Post Master’s programs. She was instrumental in the inclusion of legislation protective to women and infants in the Patient Protection and Affordable Healthcare Act. She was a public reviewer for the National Institute of Mental Health and a recipient of numerous awards for clinical work and mental health advocacy. She has presented on IPT, CBT, DBT and Perinatal and Postpartum Mood Disorders in workshops, webinars, Grand Rounds and presentations across the country from UC Berkeley to Columbia University, among other national organizations. She maintains a private practice in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey.

If after registering, you determine that you can no longer attend this event, The Office of Global and Lifelong Learning will issue refunds on the following basis:
- Refund requests made on or before January 31, 2022 (by midnight): full refund
- Refund requests made on or before February 3, 2022 (by midnight): 50% refund
- Refund requests made on or after February 4, 2022 : no refund
If this event is cancelled, all registrants will be fully reimbursed. To withdraw from and be reimbursed for this event, please complete the event withdrawal form.

55 jurisdictions accept ACE-approved provider CE contact hours. ACE is not an approved Continuing Education provider in the states of New York (though NYU Silver is NYSED CE approved in NYS) and West Virginia, unless the event is outside of West VA. ACE only approves individual courses in New Jersey, though NYU Silver is CSWE-accredited and therefore accepted for licensed NJ professionals.
