This videotaped presentation is viewable online from a computer via streaming video. This webinar on adult bereavement is comprised of a discussion of the breadth of feelings and behaviors that constitute "normal" grieving, the research on continuing bonds, construction of meaning, definitional problems with the term "complicated" mourning, case examples and interventions.
Learning Goals
- Dispel the assumptions of what constitutes "normal grieving",
- Consider the recent research on mourning, especially the construct of continuing bonds, meaning reconstruction and the complexities of defining complicated mourning; and,
- Describe practice-based and beginning evidence-based interventions.
Presenter
Susan B. Gerbino, MSW, PhD
Certificate in Bioethics and the Medical Humanities, Clinical Associate Professor of Social Work; Founding Director, Zelda Foster Studies Program in Palliative and End-of-Life Care
Dr. Susan Gerbino taught at NYU Silver for more than three decades. She was the Founding Director of the Zelda Foster Studies Program in Palliative and End-of-Life Care, which includes an MSW student fellowship, a post-master’s certificate for early career social workers, and a leadership fellowship for mid-career social workers.
Dr. Gerbino taught in the MSW program as well as the Zelda Foster Studies Program. She has a private practice specializing in work with people with chronic or life-threatening illnesses and complicated bereavement.
Dr. Gerbino is the co-founder of NASW-Mentorship Program, which provides support and continuing education for recent BSW and MSW graduates. She was the 2005 NASW-NY State Social Worker of the Year for that program and for her work in the wake of September 11.

ACE only approves individual courses in New Jersey, though NYU Silver is CSWE-accredited and therefore accepted for licensed NJ professionals.
