Interpersonal Psychotherapy – A Timely Approach for Client Diversity
Overview

Self Study
NYSED and ASWB/ACE Approved for 1 CE contact hour
Original live webinar event presented on June 11, 2019
This 75 minute recorded webinar offers an introduction to the theory, application, interventions and uniqueness of Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT). While IPT has been an evidence-based approach for over a decade, it appears to be underutilized by clinicians who are increasingly in need of effective strategies that do not pathologize the anguish of marginalized populations.
Interpersonal Psychotherapy is well-aligned with social work values in that it truly starts “where the client is” interpreting their experiences through the four target areas of grief and loss, interpersonal deficits, interpersonal disputes, and role transitions. Participants will also be given an overview of the theoretical basis of IPT (psychodynamic, attachment theory, communications theory and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy [CBT]) which underscores the power of this short-term intervention.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
Gain a better understanding of the three theoretical approaches from which IPT is derived
Identify the four problem areas addressed by IPT treatment
Understand the Interpersonal Triad in IPT
Name three IPT interventions
