As rights for people living according to their authentic sexual orientation/gender identity are increasing across the globe (e.g. universal marriage equality, employment protection), further understanding of how to work with LGBTIQ people seeking asylum in the United States is crucial for social workers. This workshop will give an overview of LGBTIQ rights around the world and then discuss how social workers can best advocate and build networks to support these cases. Specific case examples from work in the Unitarian Universalist Congregation to the United Nations will be highlighted.
