Understanding Substance Use Disorders and Effective Treatment Options
Overview
Self Study
NYSED and ASWB/ACE Approved for 1 CE contact hour
According to the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, nearly 22 million Americans struggle with an alcohol or drug problem (2005). Though information is still forthcoming, the current coronavirus pandemic has been associated with substance mis-use challenges related to the morbidity and mortality caused by the disease and to mitigation activities, including the impact of physical distancing and stay-at-home orders. In June 2020, nearly 40% of surveyed Americans reported struggling with a mental health or substance use disorder (CDC, August 2020). The bio-psycho-social issues of substance use intersect with every aspect of social work and mental health practice.
This webinar provides an overview of substance use disorders and effective treatment options. It focuses on classification of substances, theories of addiction, assessment and DSM-5 diagnoses, and effective treatment approaches. This course also highlights some of the common justice issues of substance use, such as the over-incarceration of the BIPOC community. It advocates that treatment options be open and available to everyone, and that effective treatment options include study of a diverse population. The webinar ends with recommended resources and readings for further study.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Identify five (5) key concepts that practitioners must know in treating substance mis-use.
- Gain a better understanding of the five (5) classifications of mood-altering substances.
- Increase knowledge on the three (3) theories of addictions.
- Learn the current assessment and DSM-5 diagnostic processes for substance use disorder.
- Specify the seven (7) most known effective treatment options, inclusive of trauma-informed care.
