OVERVIEW

Transgender and gender expansive (TGGE) youth account for 0.7% of the population and are at high risk for anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns. This workshop aims to teach providers how to differentiate between gender identity, gender expression, and assigned sex at birth. We will also examine the diagnosis of Gender Dysphoria and the treatment of gender dysphoria including psychosocial treatment recommendations as well as medical interventions. Medical interventions that will be included are puberty blockers, gender affirming hormones including testosterone and estrogen, and gender affirming surgeries. In addition, guidelines for referrals in line with the World Profession Association for Transgender Health’s Standards of Care Version 7 will be reviewed.   

Learning Objectives

PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:           

  • Identify the difference between assigned sex at birth, gender identity, and gender expression
  • Gain an understanding on how to diagnose for gender dysphoria in children and adolescents
  • Understand the medical intervention that are available to youth with gender dysphoria

Samantha Busa, PsyD

Samantha Busa, PsyD, is the Clinical Director of the Gender and Sexuality service and a psychologist in the Anita Saltz Institute for Anxiety and Mood Disorders at the Child Study Center of Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone. Dr. Busa completed the Foundational Course in Transgender Health as well as advanced workshops in Mental Health and Child and Adolescent Mental Health provided by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health. She also specializes in evidence based psychotherapies including cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavioral therapy for anxiety and mood disorders. Dr. Busa is the director of the NYU Child Study Center Gender and Sexuality psychology externship as well as teaches and supervises psychology and psychiatry trainees in transgender mental health. She also teaches the course Transgender Youth in the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Studies Minor at NYU.
