Biography
Jeane Anastas is a Professor Emerita at NYU Silver. Dr. Anastas publishes widely in the areas of women's issues, LGBT rights, philosophy of knowledge and the science of social work, social work doctoral education, and practice research. Her current research involves pregnant teens, both a study of low-income teens in New York City and their mental health needs and a systematic review and synthesis of qualitative research on pregnant teens.
Dr. Anastas taught courses in the MSW, DSW, and PhD programs on teaching and learning in social work, philosophy of knowledge and of mind, and social welfare policy. She served as a mentor, advisor (committee chair), or member of doctoral dissertation committees for PhD students and also served as a mentor or publication committee member for DSW students. Dr. Anastas served as President of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) from 2011-14. In recognition of her years of leadership in the social work profession, she was named a Social Work Pioneer© in 2015.
In 2007, Dr. Anastas received the Council on Social Work Education's award for the Greatest Recent Contribution to Social Work Education; in 2011 she received the Distinguished Teaching Medal at New York University; and in 2012 she received the Feminist Scholar Award from CSWE’s Women’s Council. Her recent book, Teaching in Social Work: Theory and Practice for Social Work Educators, was published by Columbia University Press in 2010 and is currently in revision for a second edition. Her book on Doctoral Education in Social Work was published by Oxford University Press in 2012, was based on a national survey of doctoral students in social work. In the past she has been very involved in the journals Affilia: The Journal of Women in Social Work and the Journal of Gay & Lesbian Social Services.
Dr. Anastas previously served on numerous national committees and boards in social work and social work education, including chairing the ANSWER Coalition working on the Dorothy A. Height/Whitney M. Young Jr. Social Work Reinvestment Act and other legislation to advance social work education and research. Active in NASW since 1986, her past national NASW leadership experience includes chairing NCNLI and NCOWI and the Advisory Committee to NASW's Center for Workforce Studies. She has also served on the national boards and executive committees of IASWR, the Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR), and as chair of GADE (Group for the Advancement of Doctoral Education). Past president of the Massachusetts Chapter from 1989-1991, she was the chapter's Social Worker of the Year in 1995. She was also a visiting scholar at CSWE in 2006-07, and was elected to the National Academies of Practice in Health Care in 2007.
Dr. Anastas earned her PhD in Social Welfare Policy from Brandeis University, her MSW from Boston College Graduate School of Social Work, and her BLS in social work from Metropolitan College, Boston University.
