Biography
Victoria Stanhope is Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and a Professor at NYU Silver. Dr. Stanhope’s professional interests are in mental health services research and policy with a specialization in person-centered care, health information technology, and integrated health care models.
Dr. Stanhope’s research, which has been funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, has focused on the person-centered care and service engagement within community mental health care. The context for this research has been the mental health recovery movement, which has made service choice, person-centered care, and shared decision a cornerstone of mental health reform. The aim of her research is to promote meaningful partnerships between providers and the people they serve. More recently, Dr. Stanhope has focused on the role that organizational factors play in implementing evidence based practices within complex service settings. She is currently leading a study funded by the Constance and Martin Silver Center on Data Science and Social Equity that is leveraging artificial intelligence techniques to measure person-centered care in behavioral health settings.
In addition to being published in many high-impact journals, Dr. Stanhope has done extensive editorial service. She is currently Associate Editor of Administration and Policy in Mental Health and Mental Health Services Research and she has served as Co-President of the Affilia: Feminist Inquiry in Social Work Corporate Board and on the editorial board of Social Work in Health Care.
Dr. Stanhope’s teaching area is in social welfare policy and research methods. She has taught courses in Silver’s undergraduate, masters, and doctoral programs and she designed and leads the study away course in Comparative Mental Health Policy and Practice in the U.K. and the U.S. In 2016, she was recognized for her outstanding mentorship by the Council on Social Work Education’s Council on the Role and Status of Women in Social Work Education. As Director of Silver’s PhD Program since August 2019, Dr. Stanhope has fostered student success including NIMH, NIDA, and NIA funded fellowships and grant awards. Under her leadership, the program has also seen graduates secure appointments as assistant professors at research universities as well as prestigious postdoctoral and research appointments.
Prior to her social work career, Dr. Stanhope had eight years of policy experience working in Washington, DC, as an advocate for school psychologists in the areas of mental health, health care, and diversity issues. She participated in national coalitions of public interest organizations lobbying Congress and the administration on issues related to health care reform, welfare reform, and mental health parity.
Dr. Stanhope earned her PhD from the University of Pennsylvania, her MSW from the University of Pittsburgh, her MA in Public Policy from The George Washington University, and her BA from St. Andrews University, Scotland.
