NYU Silver School of Social Work to Host Taiwanese Social Workers

The NYU Silver School of Social Work will host a training of 21 social workers from the nonprofit organization Taiwan Fund for Children and Families as part of the 2011 Sino-American International Summer Training Program. The program starts on Monday, June 20, and ends on Saturday, July 9.

Under the direction of Associate Professor Yuhwa Eva Lu, the annual project provides training in child, youth, and family prevention and intervention through classes at the NYU School of Social Work and visits to agencies in the New York metropolitan area. The curriculum focuses specifically on preventative services with children and families, high-risk youth and families, and mental health services.

The Sino-American International Summer Training Program began in the 1991 at San Diego State University, initially focusing on child protection services, and then moved to University of California at Berkeley. Since 1998, the training has been held at the Silver School of Social Work. The program's goal has been to foster professional development and a deeper understanding of services for children, youth, and families.

"As much as the social workers from Taiwan have gained from their experience in New York over the past 13 years, NYU has benefited as much from this international, cross-cultural training," said Lu. "As a School we have learned about their culture, and as social workers we have learned how to better help Asian-American clients."

A welcome reception will be held on June 21 at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York.
