Remembering Former Dean Alvin Schorr

The Silver School is saddened to announce the passing of our former Dean Alvin Louis Schorr (1970 – 73). Dr. Schorr was 94 years old and died of natural causes in Charlotte, North Carolina on February 13th. Dr. Schorr dedicated his life and career to fighting poverty. During his tenure, NYU decided to close the Social Work School in 1973; he was instrumental in keeping it open through tireless fundraising, and ultimately, resigning in protest. Learn more about his efforts in our 50th Anniversary book. In 1972, Dr. Schorr established the Center for Studies of Income Maintenance Policy, which focused on policies related to income, including work, social security, and taxation. His personal motto was, "Tikkun Olam," repairing the world through acts of social justice and kindness. Dr. Schorr penned numerous social policy books including his memoir "Passion and Policy.” The Silver Community honored Dr. Schorr at the 50th Anniversary Benefit Celebration in 2010. We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife of 67 years, Ann, and their children, Jessica, Kenneth, and Wendy.
