Class of 2020 MSW student Diane Galligan was awarded a 2019 Diana List Cullen Memorial First Year MSW Student Writing Scholarship from the Metropolitan Chapter of the New York State Society for Clinical Social Work (NYSSCSW). Each year, the chapter confers a $500 scholarship and a one-year NYSSCSW membership on one student from each from NYU Silver and six other New York City schools of social work in recognition of outstanding clinically-oriented writing done in their first year of the MSW program.

The paper for which Galligan received the award, entitled “First Year, First Client,” chronicles her clinical work with a 10-year-old boy during her first-year field placement at a Brooklyn elementary school. “The primary focus was on identifying and treating depression in that young age cohort,” explained Galligan. “The paper also touched on themes of social justice, incarceration, family systems, and the remarkable promise and resilience of this young man.”

Diane presented her paper and received her scholarship check at NYSSCSW's awards ceremony on November 6, 2019.
