NYU Silver School of Social Work has received a gift to launch the Second Career Fellowship for Clinical Scholars in Social Work. The new fellowship, starting as a pilot, is the first of its kind at the Silver School, covering full tuition, fees, and living expenses. It will be awarded to two clinically focused career changers admitted to the School’s two-year, full-time MSW program from Fall 2020 through Spring 2022.

The fellowship is made possible by an anonymous donor and NYU Silver MSW graduate whose life was enriched by pursuing a second career in clinical social work. The merit- and need-based fellowship aims to enable other career changers to pursue their passion for the social work profession with purpose. NYU Silver is nationally regarded for its rigorous training in direct practice with individuals, families, and groups.

“Career changers bring valuable life experience and perspective to the classroom and field settings,” said Dean Neil B. Guterman. “However, returning to school during a time when one may have multiple obligations can present significant financial and real-world hurdles. Through this full-cost fellowship, this donor is giving back to NYU Silver, clearing the path for two high-caliber, clinically interested, second-career MSW students who otherwise might not be able to shoulder the burden. We are enormously grateful for the donor’s generosity and foresight in creating this important new fellowship at the School.”

NYU Silver encourages all prospective MSW students who are changing careers and who are passionate about developing their clinical social work acumen to apply for the fellowship. To be eligible, applicants must be admitted to NYU Silver’s two-year, full-time MSW program beginning in the 2020-21 academic year. Those applying for the fellowship who do not receive an award will have the option to transfer their acceptance to a part-time or extended MSW program. The deadline for fellowship applications for Fall 2020 is February 20, 2020.
