Dr. Vincent Guilamo-Ramos Appointed To U.S. Presidential Advisory Council On HIV/AIDS
Dr. Vincent Guilamo-Ramos, Professor and Director of NYU Silver’s Center for Latino Adolescent and Family Health (CLAFH), has been appointed to serve on the United States Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS(PACHA). Members of the council provide guidance and recommendations to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in order to promote effective treatment and prevention and ensure quality services for people living with HIV or AIDS.
Dr. Guilamo-Ramos, who was sworn in on February 10, 2020, joins PACHA at a critical juncture, one year after the President announced an ambitious plan for ending the HIV epidemic in the U.S. by 2030. While substantial overall progress has been made in the fight against HIV in the U.S., data released in 2019 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention raised alarming concerns about widening, yet largely unrecognized, HIV/AIDS disparities among Hispanics and Latinos. In a peer-reviewed commentary published last November in the American Journal of Public Health, Dr. Guilamo-Ramos and colleagues drew attention to this overlooked HIV crisis and highlighted recommendations for a national response.
In addition to his appointments at NYU Silver and CLAFH, Dr. Guilamo-Ramos is NYU’s Associate Vice Provost of Mentoring and Outreach Programs; Pilot and Mentoring Core Director of the Center for Drug Use and HIV Research at NYU College of Public Health; and a Nurse Practitioner and Research Collaborator at the Adolescent AIDS Program at Children’s Hospital of Montefiore Medical Center. He is licensed as a clinical social worker (LCSW) and nurse practitioner (ANP-BC) with prescriptive privileges in New York State. He is also board certified in HIV/AIDS Nursing (ACRN) and as a HIV Specialist (AAHIVS) by the American Academy of HIV Medicine.
Clinically, Dr. Guilamo-Ramos has expertise in the primary care of HIV+ adolescents, provision of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for high-risk youths, and screening and treatment of sexually transmitted infections. He has been the principal investigator of numerous NIH, HHS, and other federally funded research grants studying the role of families in promoting adolescent health, with a special focus on preventing HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections, unplanned pregnancies, and improving treatment outcomes for HIV+ and at-risk youth.
Dr. Guilamo-Ramos received his PhD in social welfare from SUNY Albany, and his MSW from NYU Silver. In addition, Dr. Guilamo-Ramos holds a master's degree in management from the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at NYU, a master's degree in public health from the Global Health Leadership NYU MPH Program, and a master’s degree from the Duke University School of Nursing, nurse practitioner primary care and HIV specialization.
As a member of PACHA, Dr. Guilamo-Ramos will draw on his expertise and experience to inform HHS directly on HIV/AIDS policies and response. He said, “As a member of PACHA, I hope to provide guidance to HHS on the unique developmental and social needs of youth at risk and living with HIV/AIDS.”
