In recognition of her unique and transformational contributions to teaching, NYU Silver Professor Michelle R. Munson was among six faculty members from across the University to receive NYU’s 2022-2023 Distinguished Teaching Award. Established in 1987, the award is presented annually to outstanding faculty members who exemplify the university’s commitment to exceptional teaching.
“Dr. Munson is an innovative educator, whose dedication and leadership on behalf of NYU Silver’s students are unparalleled,” said Dean Michael A. Lindsey. “This prestigious, university-wide honor underscores the commitment that Silver has to excellence in teaching and we are so proud of Dr. Munson for being recognized in this way.”
Dr. Munson, who teaches in Silver’s MSW and PhD programs, has professional interests in mental health services research and intervention development and testing, with a focus on adolescents and young adults. She joined Silver’s faculty as an Associate Professor in 2010 and was promoted to full professor in 2018. She is also the Director of NYU Silver’s Youth and Young Adult Mental Health Group (YYAMH-G), which she founded in 2013 to advance understanding of the transition to adulthood among socially and economically marginalized young people, and develop interventions and implementation strategies to make that transition more successful. In addition to full-time faculty members from Silver and other institutions, YYAMH-G members have included many masters and doctoral students Dr. Munson has mentored through the years.
Dr. Munson serves as the Co-Chair of Silver’s Education Technology Committee and on the PhD Program’s Faculty Committee. She is a former chair of the school’s MSW Research Curriculum Area. Among the many courses she has taught over the years are Human Behavior in the Social Environment, Social Work Research, Social Work Practice, and Advanced Mental Health Practice with Children and Adolescents at the MSW level and Social Science Theories and Social Work, Theories of Direct Social Work Practice, and Social and Behavioral Interventions Research at the PhD level.
