The NYU Constance and Martin Silver Center on Data Science and Social Equity (C+M Silver Center) is excited to announce that it will be a sponsor and host for the Summer Institute in Computational Social Science in 2023, in partnership with the NYU Silver School of Social Work. The Summer Institutes in Computational Social Science (SICSS) is an international program created to train the next generation of social science researchers and to foster cutting-edge research across disciplinary boundaries. More than 2,000 early-career researchers from 125 academic fields have participated since its inception in 2017.
The 2023 SICSS-NYU Silver Summer Institute will bring together graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and early career faculty from social work and other disciplines to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and research on computational social science for social good. It will be held over 9 days in June 2023 at the NYU Silver School of Social Work building on Washington Square. The program will consist of guest lectures, group work, networking sessions, and participant-led research projects. Topics to be covered include ethics and the social impact of data science, big data sources and collection methods (including social media, web scraping, and government open data), data science analytics (including natural language processing and machine learning), and data science applications for social work.
The SICSS-NYU Silver Summer Institute will welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds and fields of study related to computational social science (e.g., social work, psychology, sociology, public health, urban planning, communication, political science, statistics, data science, and computer science). The Institute will select about 20 participants and will be free of charge to attend. Candidates with social work experience and interest in social justice/equity, and those from groups currently under-represented in computational social science, are strongly encouraged to apply, regardless of prior technical knowledge or skills. Participants will be provided with readings and online learning modules in computational social science topics in advance of the Institute.
Applications for the SICSS-NYU Silver Summer Institute are being accepted online now until March 31, 2023.
