NYU Silver had a strong presence at the Society for Social Work and Research 27th Annual Conference (SSWR 2023) with more than two dozen presentations, posters, symposia, and events featuring work by NYU Silver faculty, students, and researchers. The theme of the conference was “Social Work Science and Complex Problems: Battling Inequities + Building Solutions.”
Highlights of NYU Silver’s participation included:
- The standing-room only symposium hosted by our Constance and Martin Silver Center on Data Science and Social Equity showcasing pioneering projects by NYU Silver faculty and PhD students.
- Alum Dr. Meghan Romanelli, PhD ’19, receiving the Excellence in Research Award Honorable Mention for the paper “Factors Associated with Distinct Patterns of Suicidal Thoughts, Suicide Plans, and Suicide Attempts among U.S. Adolescents,” whose co-authors include NYU Silver Dean Michael A. Lindsey, and NYU McSilver Institute Research Assistant Tracy M. Grogan.
- PhD candidate Cliff Whetung receiving the inaugural Grand Challenges for Social Work Doctoral Award (Advance Long & Productive Lives) for his project “Weathering the Storm of Cognitive Inequities: Testing the Minority Stress and Cognition Model with Indigenous Older Adults.”
- PhD student Fatima Mabrouk’s TedX style “Brief and Brilliant” personal dialogue on the praxis of equity and justice.

Where Research Excellence Thrives
Their scholarly work addresses a wide range of concerns, including trauma, poverty reduction, public health interventions, the conceptual and philosophical foundations of clinical practice, assessment of social work education, and needs of vulnerable populations. It’s no wonder that NYU Silver’s NIH grant application success rate is twice the average.
