Dean Michael A. Lindsey made the following statement after it was announced that Dr. Linda G. Mills was selected to be the 17th President of New York University.
I couldn’t be more pleased and proud that NYU’s Board of Trustees has selected Dr. Linda G. Mills, a licensed clinical social worker and a longtime Silver School scholar, as the 17th president of New York University. This is momentous news! With her commitment to the missions of the University and of the social work profession; her deep knowledge of NYU’s strengths, complexities, and possibilities; her dedication to diversity and inclusion; and her ability to foster collaboration across differences, Dr. Mills is the exact leader that NYU needs now. She is the ideal choice to build on the tremendous success of outgoing President Andrew Hamilton.
Dr. Mills first came to NYU as an associate professor of social work in 1999, was promoted to full professor in 2001, and has continued to ascend at the University ever since. Read more about her prodigious achievements and accolades in the University’s announcement about her appointment as President Designate.
Dr. Mills’ scholarly work focuses on trauma, bias, and domestic violence. She is also an attorney, artist, author, and award-winning filmmaker, whose pictures have a particular focus on activism and social change. “Each of these unique disciplines gives me the ability to observe the world, to be curious about the world, to listen, and always to ask questions,” she explains in a video introducing her selection as President Designate. “And right now, this is a moment in history where we need to ask a whole lot of questions.”
We agree with this assertion at Silver, and I hope you will join me in congratulating Dr. Mills on her appointment. We offer our full and enduring support as she takes on her new duties on July 1, 2023.
