The textbook “The Practice of Clinical Social Work in Healthcare,” edited by NYU Silver alumni Dr. Meredith Hemphill, MSW ’09/DSW ’18 and Dr. Abigail Nathanson, MSW ’07, DSW ’20, and with a foreward by Clinical Professor Susan Gerbino, is now available from Springer Nature Group’s Essential Clinical Social Work Series.
The 14 chapters, which examine a range of major illnesses through a social work lens, are a collective effort of 28 social workers – many of them fellow Silver alumni – from diverse backgrounds and 20 healthcare institutions across the country.
“Our focus,” said Dr. Nathanson, “is on starting the conversation around clinical intervention and psychosocial-spiritual framing of the illness process, appropriate for all healthcare providers, social workers and therapists who may work with folks dealing with health issues.”
Dr. Hemphill added, “When we started out as healthcare social workers, there was nothing like this focused on clinical care with a careful integration of real life, contemporary healthcare issues with a common thread of social work values and perspective. I’m so grateful for it to be here, and so grateful for it to be available to students and new social workers!”
