New York, NY – Social workers play a key role in furthering the well-being of children and their families. NYU Silver Clinical Associate Professor Aminda Heckman has been named Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Family Social Work, a leading peer-reviewed publication that is advancing knowledge in the ever-evolving field. Dr. Heckman, who has both research and clinical expertise in family social work, is also the Director of NYU Silver’s Post Master’s Certificate Program in Child and Family Therapy.
The editorship presents an opportunity for Dr. Heckman to increase her contribution to the profession and the children and families social workers serve. “There is not enough published scholarly work that is keeping pace with how families look and what they need today especially through the lens of BIPOC, religious minorities and LGBTQIA,” said Dr. Heckman. She also hopes to highlight practice models that may be beneficial and applicable for clinicians. “It’s exciting to think I can have an impact as a shepherd for clinicians’ practice wisdom to be recognized and disseminated.”
Dr. Heckman noted that one of her most significant mentors, retired NYU Silver Professor Judith Siegel, was editor-in-chief of the Journal of Family Social Work from 2015 to 2020. Dr. Siegel was also the Founding Director of NYU Silver’s Child and Family Post-Master’s Certificate Program. “I have big shoes to fill,” said Dr. Heckman. “I’m honored to be following in Dr. Siegel’s footsteps.”
A member of the NYU Silver faculty since 2015, Dr. Heckman has research interests in linguistically and culturally competent social work practice and education; mental health services in urban communities; and integrated primary and behavioral health. Her clinical experience includes inpatient pediatric psychiatry and outpatient adult mental health. Dr. Heckman has served as Coordinator of NYU Silver’s Rockland County and Westchester County campuses and was previously a postdoctoral research fellow at the McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research.
Established in 1994 and published by Taylor & Francis, the Journal of Family Social Work contains peer reviewed research articles, conceptual and practice articles devoted to innovative family theory and practice subjects.
