New York, NY – Research finds racial and ethnic minority youth are more likely to be referred to child protective services for alleged sexual abuse than their white peers. As he welcomed participants to The New York Foundling’s annual Mel Schneiderman Professional Conference at NYU this week, Dean Michael A. Lindsey noted NYU Silver’s alignment with the theme “Turning Awareness into Action: Strategies for Addressing Child Sexual Abuse in Marginalized Communities.”
In remarks to scores of conference attendees, Dean Lindsey also noted that among our new full-time faculty is Assistant Professor Sarah Godoy, whose research focuses on the commercial sexual exploitation of children and adults, including the intersections with child welfare, legal, and healthcare systems. Preventing the exploitation of marginalized young people through sexual abuse and violence, as well as other forms of traumatic harm, is also central to the NY Child and Adolescent Maltreatment Prevention Network, which is spearheaded by NYU Silver Associate Professor Kathrine Sullivan. Part of that federally-funded network is Silver’s CHAMP Institute, which provides intensive training in trauma-informed care for child welfare to selected MSW student Fellows so that they are prepared for careers in child welfare prevention.
Dean Lindsey also cited the wide array of advanced certificate programs and continuing education opportunities offered by Dr. Ben Sher and our Office of Global and Lifelong Learning. Topics include trauma-informed clinical practice, healthcare social work, crisis counseling and many other areas of study.
The New York Foundling serves 30,000 people each year with programs, services and opportunities to create transformational change in their own lives. NYU Silver is proud to be an annual sponsor of the organization’s professional conference and an ongoing partner in its vital work.
